In Alabama, SB184 bans best-practice healthcare for people under the age of 19, making hormone therapy, puberty blockers, and surgery inaccessible in Alabama for any trans person until they turn 19. The law also imposes criminal felony penalties for providers who violate the law.
Youth can still access mental health care, which is not restricted or banned by this law. Youth and their families may also accompany youth to access care in other states where gender-affirming care has not been restricted. Prescriptions for gender-affirming medication can still legally be filled in Alabama, as the law does not govern pharmacies.
As of January 11, 2024 following a court order from the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals, SB184 took effect.
The Campaign for Southern Equality is working with partners across Alabama, including the Magic City Acceptance Center and Prism United, to provide resources and information to impacted families. Please use the form below to request more information.
